I'm the mother of a family of five. Johnathan and I have 3 children: Brandon, Morgan, and Erin. Brandon and Morgan are teenagers and Erin turns four in August 2011. We have lived many places since Johnathan and I met in 1997. We lived in a couple different towns in Arizona before we moved to Las Vegas. We lived in Vegas for 7 years, then moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. I tried to grow some things in Vegas- mainly pretty flowers. They did okay. As well as anything can do in that kind of heat! In Grand Junction, the soil at the house we lived in was very poor quality. To make up for not having a garden, I've always had a bunch of houseplants that I would care for. We lived in Colorado for a couple of years and moved to Oklahoma to be closer to my parents. I started this blog when we started the garden that first year.
One of my father's dreams was for our household to be self-sustained. All my life, when possible, we had gardens. He passed that love of fresh food on to me. When I moved here, my father and I sat and planned a garden. He was always helping me even when he could no longer physically go out into the garden anymore. Every morning I would come in and deliver what I called the "Sprout Report". I would tell him all about things that had happened overnight in the garden and he would encourage me and offer solutions to problems.
He passed away in May of 2010 and the garden sat empty that year.
Now it's been a year since he passed. The garden this year is flourishing. When Erin and I work out there some mornings, a warm breeze swirls around me and sometimes I'll turn, expecting him to be sitting there. Maybe he is...
